The Day Today: BG to be at 2GB; Optus footy deal wobbles; Friday beers at PHD
Gallagher to lead Nine radio rebuild
Nine granted sovereignty to its audio operation, appointing former Southern Cross Austereo sales chief Brian Gallagher as commercial director of audio.
In Sydney the move will see the sales team for 2GB move out of Nine’s company headquarters in North Sydney and back into the studio operation in Pyrmont. Nine Radio will also run its own race with marketing and other backroom operations.
Champagne football
The economics of TV sports rights were in sharp focus today, with The Age revealing that Kayo is putting up the price of its standard streaming tier to $40 per month. Meanwhile the AFR revealed that the attempt by Optus to offload its English Premier League soccer rights has reached an impasse. The AFR reported: “Privately, Nine thinks Optus should give it a sum of money to subsidise the costs and take on its subscribers. Optus disagrees and believes it should be paid for the takeover of its streaming business.”
PHD enters the hammer barn
Omnicom’s PHD has seen off IPG and GroupM agencies to win the lucrative Bunnings media account, B&T reported this afternoon. The incumbent on the account was IPG’s Initiative. According to B&T, Bunnings declined to confirm the outcome.

Time to leave you to your evening.
I’ll be back in the morning with Best of the Week. I’ll be giving some thought to what Nine’s appointment of Brian Gallagher means, and what to make of QMS’s push to get outdoor up to a 20% share.
And if you haven’t had enough of me for tonight, join me over on ABC Radio National shortly for MediaLand. Vivienne Kelly and I talk Nine Radio, the media’s obsession with the Coalition split and the gender pay gap at the ABC. And we’ll be discussing media literacy with Squiz Kids boss Bryce Corbett. We’re on air at 5.30.
Have a great night.
